AKB48 are considered queens of the charts, but their official rival group "Nogizaka46" has now revealed it's first members- the 36 full members and 16 temporary senbatsu girls made it clear that they were ready to challenge the throne!
Their center member for now is a confident 15 year old Yoshimoto Ayaka who said "My rival is Itano Tomomi-san". 17 year old Sakurai Reika stepped it up a notch causing a chorus of laughs.
The group is named after Sony Entertainment's Nogizaka SME building. A record-shattering number of girls applied, 38,934 in total, which were then narrowed down to 56. These final few had to show off their personality in an interview, and flexibility in a special-skill performance such as karate or ballet!
"I want to be an idol that men and women will all love!" pledged Akimoto Manatsu, aged 18. "We want to have an impact not just in Japan, but around the world" added 15 year old Ichiki Rena.
Oricon reports that as you read this, Sony Entertainment already have a variety show and a debut single lined up for Nogizaka46, so watch this space!
